My first point would be in pointing out the fact that Edwin Jackson hasn't really been much more than an okay 4th starter in the rotation. On top of that Jackson, Dotel, and Patterson are all up for contract after this year. You would have to think that with Wainwright, Carpenter, Garcia, Lohse, and Westbrook all being under contracts (pending the Cardinals pick up the options, which they should) for next year, there would be no way to fit Jackson into a new contract after this year. So basically the Cardinals are picking up a few "par" rentals until the end of the year. I would argue that none of these players give the Cardinals a real shot to go deep into the playoffs either.
Second, if the Cardinals are looking short term to win this year they need to dish out and go get Heath Bell from the Padres. Bell gives them a shut down closer to help them not blow games late. I am not in total agreement in dishing out top prospects, but if you decide to go all in and dish a player with the potential of Rasmus you might as well make sure you give the club the best chance possible to win.
All in all, I don't like the trade, but I do like the potential that the Rzepcznski has to be a good set up guy for the next couple of years.
