Cardinals Stats - 7/29/11

The Cardinals this year are 15-30 when the team commits 1 or more errors.  They are 40-19 when they commit no errors.  Why the heck has Mo not made a trade for a middle infielder yet?! Theriot is up to 16 errors on the year and doesn't appear to be slowing down. The Cardinals need help on defense in a big way.

Rasmus to the Jays

It has been one day since the trading of Colby Rasmus to the Blue Jays and I have been sitting around all day listening to sports talk radio. Frankly, I am getting sick of hearing every single person talking about how it makes the Cardinals a much better team with Rasmus gone.  All I have heard is that the Cardinals are setting themselves up to have a chance at a World Series run, which I would disagree with.
My first point would be in pointing out the fact that Edwin Jackson hasn't really been much more than an okay 4th starter in the rotation. On top of that Jackson, Dotel, and Patterson are all up for contract after this year. You would have to think that with Wainwright, Carpenter, Garcia, Lohse, and Westbrook all being under contracts (pending the Cardinals pick up the options, which they should) for next year, there would be no way to fit Jackson into a new contract after this year.  So basically the Cardinals are picking up a few "par" rentals until the end of the year. I would argue that none of these players give the Cardinals a real shot to go deep into the playoffs either.
Second, if the Cardinals are looking short term to win this year they need to dish out and go get Heath Bell from the Padres.  Bell gives them a shut down closer to help them not blow games late. I am not in total agreement in dishing out top prospects, but if you decide to go all in and dish a player with the potential of Rasmus you might as well make sure you give the club the best chance possible to win.
All in all, I don't like the trade, but I do like the potential that the Rzepcznski has to be a good set up guy for the next couple of years.
